21st ANNUAL MANAGEMENT CONVENTION (AMC)

Calicut Management Association (CMA), founded in 1996 at Calicut, is one of the most vibrant Local Management Associations (LMAs) affiliated to All India Management Association (AIMA). CMA is holding its flagship event, the Annual Management Convention (AMC) on 20th – 21st January 2018 at Taj Gateway, Kozhikode with the inaugural session on 20th and six technical sessions and valedictory session on 21st January 2018.
The AMC will be focused on supporting the development of a healthy ecosystem for entrepreneurs and startup communities in North Malabar. We believe that Entrepreneurial creativity and Entrepreneurial skills have to be updated with Entrepreneurial knowledge in important areas, beginning from startup to scaling up. The effort is to give the much-needed inputs on key areas and to acclimatize today’s entrepreneurs to latest developments, “think differently” and approach business in a much more creative way.
It is with this underlying philosophy that Calicut Management Association has structured the theme for its 21st Annual Management Convention (AMC) “Brick Building Enterprises – Vision to Action “. We at CMA believe that all the ingredients are available in North Malabar for fostering an entrepreneurial ecosystem.
For the Annual Management Convention (AMC) we are focusing on six key aspects most relevant to entrepreneurs and startups. We are sure that this will give much needed focus on key areas essential for today’s startups and entrepreneurs.
In the convention we will be deliberating on key elements, its basics and the latest developments, which are important bricks that go into the building of a successful enterprise. Every brick matters:
- Marketing & Brand Building: Challenges for Entrepreneurs and Startups
- HR Challenges for Entrepreneurs – During Startup & Scaling up
- Importance of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems for small and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs.
- Entrepreneurial Finance: Essential focus areas / tools in setting up, monitoring and managing the finance of Startups and Entrepreneurs.
- Creating Intellectual Properties – Insights to Startups and Entrepreneurs
- User Centered Design Concept for Entrepreneurs and Startups: methodology to empathize with users/ customers and design for their requirements.
The speakers selected are well qualified, with rich technical and practical experience gained from organizations of repute and through their own startup ventures. The sessions are expected to empower the community with much needed resources for honing the skills and execution of their visions.
CMA, with its commitment to support the development of a thriving entrepreneurial and startup ecosystem is confident that the convention will be beneficial to early and established entrepreneurs, startups, students, industries in the medium and small-scale sector, business and trade organizations, investment and teaching community.

Chief Guest: Mr. Hari Menon, Co-founder & CEO, BigBasket.Com
Mr. Hari Menon is the Co-Founder & CEO of India’s largest online supermarket, BigBasket.com. BigBasket was founded in December 2011 with a presence in over 25 cities in India. Prior to starting BigBasket, Hari along with the founding team of BigBasket had Co-Founded Fabmart, one of the pioneers in the e-commerce in India and its physical extension – Fabmall. Hari Menon was the CEO of ‘Indiaskills’ – the Vocational Education Joint Venture between Manipal Group and City & Guilds (UK)
Mr. Hari begun his career with ‘Wipro’ as a Business Head in the Infotech business. Prior to Fabmall, Mr. Hari had also headed Programme Management at Planetasia.com wherein he oversaw large scale project deliveries involving a wide team of software developers, business analysts, web designers & web writers.
Mr Menon is an alumnus of BITS Pilani and is married to ‘Ms. Shanti Menon’ – Principal of ‘The Deen’s Academy’, Bangalore. She is the daughter of ‘Shri. E Sreedharan’, the man behind the Delhi Metro.
He is also a Music enthusiast and an avid cricket fan, member of the ‘Karnataka Cricket Association’
Guest of Honour : Mr. Hrishikesh Nair, CEO – IT Parks
Mr. Hrishikesh Nair is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IT Parks, Govt. of Kerala and is in charge of all the three Govt. IT parks in the state – Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram , Infopark, Kochi and Cyberpark, Kozhikode. He is working with the Govt for the development of IT in the state.
Alumnus of IIT, Kharagpur, Mr. Hrishikesh Nair has expertise in planning and leading medium to large scale IT initiatives that help build effective organisations. Global IT experience across USA, Latin America and Asia Pacific. He had earlier worked with Infosys in US, Japan, India as Consultant handling multiple e-Business implementations, Oracle Consulting USA as Sr. Principal handling the US West commercial projects. managed implementation projects for Global ERP, standardising the global footprint and extending the IT solution for Sherwin Williams locations worldwide.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Ashutosh Karnatak , Director (Projects)-GAIL (India) Ltd.
Dr. Ashutosh has served as Executive Director (Projects) in GAIL and serves as its Business Responsibility Head. During his rich career span of over 30 years, he has managed diverse infrastructure projects such as construction of cross country trunk pipelines like Dabhol – Bangalore, Dahej-Vijaipur, Dahej-Uran, Dabhol-Panvel, CGD networks in Mumbai, R-LNG terminal at Dabhol, and building projects like, LPG gas processing plant at Gandhar, besides spearheading wind and solar energy projects.
He is the proponent of the movement called PI-PI-CI (“Positive India – Projectised India – Competent India”). He has developed an innovative Project Monitoring and Controlling technique called ‘Arjuna – (MC4E2)ec’, and capability building model named ‘BeDoPhe’. Besides this, he has avid interest in astrology and is engaged in many social and developmental initiatives.
He is also in-charge of GAIL- Startup, created to support the Government of India (GoI) Startup initiative and to generate long term commercial benefits.
Dr. Ashutosh is an M. Tech from IIT Delhi, an MBA in Finance and a Ph.D. from University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun, Dr. Karnataka is presently pursuing Post-Doctorate in Business Administration on ‘Organizational Maturity in Project Management’ He is a multi-talented personality who has developed innovative techniques and authored books on varied subjects. He is a B Tech in Electrical Engineering from HBTI, Kanpur.
Guest Speaker: Dr. Saji Gopinath, CEO-Kerala Startup Mission/Director IIITMK
Dr. Saji Gopinath, Chief Executive Officer of Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) is the implementing agency of Government of Kerala for entrepreneurship development and incubation activities in Kerala. Dr. Saji Gopinath will be presenting the convention theme “Brick Building Enterprises: Vision to Action”. Dr. Saji Gopinath holds a Ph. D from Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, M.Tech, Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and B.Tech (Mechanical) University of Kerala.
Dr. Saji Gopinath was earlier dean of School of Management, Bennett University set up by Times of India and Director, T. A. Pai Management Institute, Manipal.
His niche area is ‘Crafting Transformational leaders who could think out of the box’. As an academician and public speaker, he guides the youngsters to join entrepreneurship and motivates them to surpass their thought barriers, defy many comfort zones to make a niche of his own.
Felicitation Speech: Mr. Sanjay Grover, Director – AIMA
Mr. Sanjay Grover will be representing AIMA in the convention. He is currently heading the Central Support Services, Corporate Communications, Local Management Associations & Membership Department of AIMA. Before joining All India Management Association, he worked with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for 24 years.
During his tenure, he managed several responsibilities spreading across various functions such as Corporate Communications, Image and Brand Building and developed strong working relationship with various affiliated associations and developmental bodies, Government departments at the Centre and States, Indian missions overseas, Government officials and agencies of various countries, CII MoU partners etc.

The topic is focused to give required input to the delegates on the current trends and key aspects of marketing and brand building for the entrepreneurs and startups.
Technical Session 1
Topic: “Importance of Digital Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems for small and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs “
ERP system works as super- glue that connect critical business aspects in an organization. The focus of the session shall be on Digital Transformation of ERP Systems, Implementation, Latest Developments and how it plays a vital role now in risk management and change management in organization.
Speaker: Mr. Subrata Mandal, Chief Information Officer (CIO) – Aliaxis Group of Companies in India.
Mr. Subrata is a B. Tech. from IIT Kharagpur, an MBA from IIM Bangalore and completed Advanced Leadership Program from Harvard Business School and HCL Technologies’ joint initiatives. He is currently working as Chief Information Officer for Aliaxis group of companies in India and South-East Asia. Subrata has worked extensively in Digital transformation, ERP, IT Infrastructure Management & Application Management Services areas for various industry verticals.
His technology experience includes primarily SAP and open source based digital technologies in B2B domain. He has worked as Digital Service Line leader at HCL Technologies and has also worked in organizations like AXON UK, IBM UK, Wipro, E&H Infoserve Germany, etc. and spent almost half of his career working abroad in UK, Europe and USA. Subrata He lives in Bangalore with his family members.
Technical Session 2
Topic: “User Centered Design Concept for Entrepreneurs and Startups: Methodology to empathize with users/customers and design for their requirements “
The focus of the session is to give the entrepreneurs and startups the benefit, usefulness and latest developments in User Centered Design (UCD) that focuses on user needs and requirements. The consistent application of human factors, ergonomics, usability engineering, and other techniques revolving around the users. USD aims in developing usable and accessible systems, aiming for user and is an iterative design approach that aims to develop an understanding of user needs, doing so through a mixture of investigative (e.g., surveys and interviews) and generative (e.g., brainstorming) methods and tools.
Speaker: Mr. Amandeep Singh, Manager – Experience Design Team Advisory, Ernst & Young, Thiruvananthapuram
Mr. Amandeep Singh holds Master of Design degree from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is an Experience Architect with practice in User Centric Design and design led innovation & business. His work has helped bridge the gap between business and design, and helped bring in the value of design thinking to the business advantage.
His competencies include Design led Innovation, Applied Design Thinking, Experience Design (User Research, Interaction Design, Usability Evaluation, Rapid Prototyping), Information Architecture, Industrial Design (form, biomechanics, ergonomics, material & finish, product usage environments), Usability Analysis and Testing, Design Strategy (Business Analysis) and Product Design Management.
Technical Session 3
Topic: “Entrepreneurial Finance: Essential focus areas / tools in setting up, monitoring and managing the finance of Startups and Entrepreneurs “
The focus of the session is on Entrepreneurial Finance to give an overall understanding of important financial decisions of entrepreneurs/startups, the key issues faced or to be foreseen during the project implementation and stabilizing stages. How should funding decisions be structured? Various financing models available across the venture’s life cycle. Relative costs and benefits of each source of funding and the connections between a venture’s financing strategy and its product-market strategy.
Speaker: Mr. Venkatesh Channaraj, Chief Business Officer – HolidayIQ
Mr. Venkatesh Channaraj, hold an MS in Operations Research from Texas A&M University and MBA from Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad and is Currently the Chief Business Officer at HolidayIQ, India’s largest travel review site and India’s largest travel community.
He was earlier Business Director, MakeMyTrip.com and Asst. Vice President, Capital One. His areas of specialization also include Specialties: Internet Marketing, Online Product, Data Mining, Consumer Research, Strategy / Competitive Analysis, Customer Engagement, Travel Distribution and Credit/Savings Products
Technical Session 4
Topic: “Creating Intellectual Properties – Insights to Startups and Entrepreneurs”
The focus of the session shall be to give good understanding of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), importance of IP protection, its implications, implementation, long term sustainable advantages, criticality for Startups and Entrepreneurs and the latest developments. Intellectual Property is key for entrepreneurs and an entrepreneur has to be knowledgeable about IP so that they can identify it and take proactive steps to protect theirs – entrepreneurs have a valuable brand that should be trademarked, inventions that can be patented and websites, blogs and/or newsletters that can be copyrighted.
Speaker: Ms. Poornima Mohanachandran, CEO – ekLakshya VLSI Centre
Ms. Poornima Mohanachandran is an alumnus NIT, Kozhikode and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and has more than 25 years of industry experience covering all aspects of product development and business development.
Poornima was former Director of Texas Instruments and started her entrepreneurial journey with i2iTeleSolutions in 2009 and presently is CEO of ekLakshya VLSI Centre a company focused on training in technology engineering and behavioral sciences using innovative blended learning approaches.
Technical Session 5
Topic: “HR Challenges for Entrepreneurs – During Startup & Scaling up”
The focus of the presentation shall be to give good understanding of HR System Design, HR policies at different stages, HR requirements, design and deployment of Talent Management, the current challenges and identifying training requirements. These are the areas that require special focus during startup and while scaling up of the entrepreneurial journey.
Speaker: Dr. Binu Modoor, Managing Director at BLITZ
Dr. Binu Modoor a certified Hogan and DISC coach, is a Post graduate in Human Resource Management and a Ph. D in Organisational Development. Dr. Binu Modoor is an effective Public speaker on various Management Subjects and a trainer. Currently he is the Director of BLITZ which provides Leadership consulting and coaching besides a suite of Organisational Development and HR consulting portfolios. His areas of specialization include Organisational
Development, Strategic HR, HR Consulting, Leadership Development, Consulting and Coaching, Competency Mapping and Talent & High Potential Management.
